GT ASA 02E is an internal sizing agent for paper and board based on alkenyl succinic anhydride (ASA).

Application
Like any ASA size, GT ASA 02E is supplied as pure active sizing agent, which needs to be transferred into an aqueous emulsion prior to use. This is best accomplished by means of a high shear emulsification unit, using cationic starch as stabilizer.

The GT ASA 02E size emulsion is added into the approach system of the paper machine at a point, which allows for homogeneous distribution of the size particles in the fiber suspension. Addition into the machine chest or earlier should be avoided in order to keep the residence time short and minimize the risk of hydrolysis. Sizing efficiency is enhanced when GT ASA 02E is used in combination with additional cationic starch in the wet end.

Small amounts of an aluminium compound like poly aluminium chloride, PAC (0.5 – 3 kg/t) will fix hydrolyzed sizing agent on the fiber and prevent from deposit formation. GT ASA 02E is a neutral sizing agent, generally applied at a wet end pH from 6.0 to 8.5.
